Keith W. Greer Memorial Scholarship
Application Deadline: April 12, 2024
The Keith W. Greer Memorial Scholarship is in memory of Keith Greer, a Boone resident and student in the public school system from age nine until he graduated from Watauga High School in 1967. He continued his education at NC State University, graduating with a BS degree in Materials Engineering in the Honors Engineering Program and then went on to study at Clemson University, where he graduated with a MS degree in Bioengineering.
His career as a research scientist in the orthopedics industry was focused on improving and developing new materials for artificial hip and knee implants, and resulted in a number of patents. His love of science made life easier and more enjoyable for people; as a result of his materials research (much of which is still in use today), many have benefited from his interest, expertise, and passion to find better solutions.
In addition to his innovative contributions to science, Keith enjoyed many rich and rewarding relationships throughout his life. His family, friends, and colleagues describe him as being patient and faithful with a kind heart, keen mind, and gentle spirit.
This $5,000.00 one-time scholarship is designed for a graduating senior who meets the following criteria:
-has been a resident of Watauga County for at least one year
-has a demonstrated interest in science and math
-is committed to attending NC State University as a freshman for the 2024-25 school year -and is seriously considering a career in science or engineering.
-integrity in all things is important, as well as dedication to (and involvement in) in school, church, or community activities.
The scholarship is meant to help a dedicated student pursue a scientific education that will enable them to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
